Ride 23 km of flat coast and heritage trail, stop at four breweries and bars, taste four beers and ciders, watch the brewers work.

A self-guided e-bike tour of Nelson's breweries and bars, starting from The Gentle Cycling Company. You ride a flat 23 km route along the coast and the historic Railway Reserve, stopping at four venues for beer and cider tastings. Hotel pickup and return transport are included, and the full day is yours to set the pace. The tour is unguided, you navigate by map, so you choose when to linger and when to move on.

The experience

You get picked up from your Nelson hotel at 10:30am and driven to The Gentle Cycling Company, where you collect your e-bike, helmet and a souvenir map marking the route. The ride itself is flat and mostly urban or on a dedicated cycle trail, so it suits any fitness level. The route hugs the coast and cuts through the historic Railway Reserve, where information boards tell the story of the region. You'll pass views over the Waimea estuary and have the option to stop at a playground, beach or Pic's Peanut Butter World if you want a break from the breweries.

The four tasting stops are built into the day: McCashin's Tap Room gives you a beer and cider tasting paddle while you watch the brewers at work, and you'll visit an English pub, a historic brewery and craft beer venues around the city. The 23 km is spread across a full day, so there's no rush. You decide how long to stay at each stop and whether to grab lunch (the route passes pizza spots, though food isn't included in the price). Emergency support is on call if you need it, and you return to your hotel by 4:30 or 5pm.

Because the tour is unguided, you navigate by map and set your own rhythm. That means no group waiting for stragglers, no commentary you have to follow, and no fixed schedule for tasting. You taste when you're ready. It also means you're responsible for finding your way, though the route is straightforward and the map is clear.

Is this one for you?Because the tour is unguided and you navigate by map, it suits riders who want to set their own pace and don't need a guide's commentary. You stop when you want, taste when you're ready, and linger at breweries or beaches without anyone waiting. If you prefer a guide explaining the history and breweries as you ride, look for a guided option instead.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

Can I do this tour if I've never ridden an e-bike before?

Yes. E-bikes are designed to help you pedal, not do the work for you, and the entire route is flat: no hills to climb. The Gentle Cycling Company will show you how to use the bike when you pick it up, and the terrain suits all fitness levels.

What's the difference between the four tasting stops?

McCashin's Tap Room is where you get the formal tasting paddle and watch the brewers. The other three stops are an English pub, a historic brewery, and craft beer venues around Nelson. Each has its own character and beer selection, so you're sampling different parts of the local brewing scene.

Do I have to drink all four beers if I'm cycling?

No. The tasting paddle is included, but you control how much you drink and how long you stay at each stop. Many riders taste a small amount at each venue and focus more on the scenery and the stops themselves.

Is lunch included, and where do I eat?

Lunch is not included in the tour price. The route passes pizza shops and other food spots (McCashin's Tap Room area has options), so you can stop and buy food when you're hungry. The Eddyline Brewery makes pizzas that riders often choose for lunch.

How long does the actual cycling take, and how much time is left for the breweries?

The full day runs from 10:30am to 4:30 or 5pm. The 23 km route is flat and takes as long as you make it. Most riders spend 4 to 5 hours on the bike and tasting stops combined, leaving time to linger at breweries, grab lunch, or visit a beach or playground if you want.

What happens if I get a flat tire or have a mechanical problem?

Emergency support is included, so you can call for help if something goes wrong with the bike. The Gentle Cycling Company will assist you or arrange a pickup if needed.
