The Experience
I’ll admit it—I wasn’t sure I’d be into rafting. But the idea of leaving Napier’s art deco streets for a day trip on the river just sounded right. Our guide, Pete (he’s been running these since before I was born, probably), met us right at the ship. The bus ride inland was quiet at first—mist on the windows, sheep everywhere, someone’s kid snoring behind me. And then we were suddenly in this wild green valley that didn’t feel like anywhere else.
The river itself? Cold enough to wake you up but not scary—grade 2 rapids, so you’re not exactly clinging on for dear life. More like drifting and laughing when someone gets splashed. At one bend, Pete started telling us about the land—80 million years back, he said, and then stories from Maori elders (I tried repeating one of the names; he grinned and shook his head). There was this moment when all you could hear was birdsong and paddles dipping. I don’t know why that stuck with me.
Lunch was homemade sandwiches and something sweet—nothing fancy but honestly perfect after floating for a couple hours. We sat in the sun drying off, swapping stories with another couple who’d jumped in to swim (I chickened out). Pete made sure we were all back on the bus with time to spare before heading to the cruise ship. I still think about that stretch of river sometimes—how easy it felt to just be there.
