The experience

Mount Maunganui's instructors teach you paddling technique and board control on land before you enter the water, so you spend the session building real skills rather than fighting to stay upright. The 2-hour adventure moves at a pace that lets you practice balance and paddling along the actual coastline, not in a pool or lagoon. You're reading real water, real wind, and the shape of the shore as you go.

The walk on Mauao breaks up the paddling and gives your legs a rest while a guide explains the local landmarks and the Māori connection to this place. The instructors share stories of ancestors and how they lived on Mount Maunganui, so the activity becomes something more than exercise: it's a way to understand the land and sea you're moving through. Snacks and a beverage are included, and the life jacket, leg rope and all board gear come with the booking.

You'll need at least a moderate level of fitness to manage the paddling and the walk, and the activity is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy. Public transportation options are available near the starting point if you're not driving yourself.

What's the Mauao walk like during the SUP adventure?

Mauao is a short guided walk that breaks up the paddling portion of the session. Your instructor points out local landmarks and explains the cultural and environmental significance of the area while you're on foot, then you return to the water to paddle back to the starting point.

Do I need paddling experience to book this adventure?

No experience is required. The session starts on land with equipment setup, safety guidance, and paddling technique instruction before you enter the water, so beginners learn the basics before they paddle.

What happens if I fall off the board?

Falling off is part of learning to paddle, and the leg rope keeps your board tethered to you so you don't lose it. You'll be wearing a life jacket the whole time, and the instructors are there to help you get back on and keep going.

What's included in the 2-hour session?

The stand-up paddle board, paddle, life jacket, and leg rope are all provided; snacks and a beverage are included; and instruction from a live guide in English is part of the booking. You bring your own swimwear and towel.
