The Experience
We were already laughing before we even left the dock — I think it was the way the wind whipped my hair straight up as I tried to squeeze into the life jacket (which, by the way, is less glamorous than it looks in photos). The lake just sat there, all glassy and blue, with those snow-dusted mountains watching us. Our guide — I want to say his name was Jamie? — gave us a quick rundown on how to steer and not tip over (I appreciated that bit), then just like that, we were off.
The first few minutes on the jet ski felt wobbly, but after a while you get this rhythm. Spray smacks your face every time you hit a little wave. There’s this sharp smell — kind of like wet stone mixed with pine — that hits you as you pick up speed. We zipped around some tiny islands near the edge of Lake Wanaka; one had these birds nesting so we slowed down, and Jamie pointed them out without even raising his voice over the engine. Didn’t expect that quiet moment in between all the roaring around.
I tried to race my partner at one point (he won, but only because he’s heavier — that’s my story anyway). The best part was pulling up into these calm little bays where everything suddenly goes silent except for water dripping off the jet ski hull. You look back at those mountains and realize how small you are out here. The whole thing took about an hour and a half but honestly, I lost track of time. My hands smelled like lake water for hours after — not complaining though.
