The experience
You paddle your own kayak up the Waitangi River, winding deeper into the Bay of Islands as your guide shares Maori legends and the history of the area. The waterfall is the destination. You reach it by water, not by walking a trail afterward. The whole outing runs 2.5 hours, and because the guide is with you the whole way, you get the story of the place as you move through it, not as a separate talk at the start or end.
No kayaking experience is required. The activity is designed for all ages and fitness levels. If you weigh over 130kg, let the operator know when you book so they can confirm your kayak. The guide speaks English and can work with cruise ship clients on a tight schedule. Souvenir photos are available to purchase after the paddle if you want a record of the day.
What’s included
- Local Maori knowledge and history commentary woven through the paddle.
- your kayak and paddle for the full 2.5 hours.

Is this one for you?Small groups and families work well here because the guide leads the whole paddle and tells the story as you go, so children and first-time paddlers move at the same pace as experienced ones. Book this if you want the waterfall and the history together, not a kayak rental where you navigate on your own.
