The experience
The day hinges on the tide. Abel Tasman Kayaks times the start and finish points around the water's movement, which means you're paddling the best stretch of the marine reserve on any given departure rather than fighting a fixed route. If you start at Awaroa, you'll reach Shag Harbour first (a hidden inlet where the granite walls rise straight from the water), then paddle south toward Tonga Island and its population of NZ fur seals. The alternative start at Onetahuti heads straight out to the seals, then follows the sculptured headlands south with the breeze. Either way, you're in the water for around eight hours with a professional guide who knows the park's rhythms and wildlife.
Lunch arrives mid-paddle on one of the beaches: a freshly baked roll filled with local produce, a sweet snack, fruit, fresh plunger coffee and local juice. The afternoon takes you through Tonga Arches, carved granite passages you paddle through, and into the tranquil lagoons and golden sand that define the heart of the reserve. A water taxi brings you back to your starting point or to Anchorage, depending on which route you've chosen. The operator is one of only three authorised to undertake marine mammal viewing from sea kayaks at Tonga, so the seal encounters are managed with the reserve's protocols in mind.
Dietary requirements are catered for, and the activity suits all fitness levels. You'll need to be at least 12 years old. Return transport from Nelson (if you're based there) needs to be arranged separately. The water taxi transfers to and from the kayaking start points are included.

Is this one for you?Choose the Awaroa to Bark Bay route if you want to start with Shag Harbour's hidden inlet and work south through the seals and arches. Pick Onetahuti to Anchorage if you prefer to head straight out to the seals and explore the heart of the reserve. The tide timetable decides which route the operator runs on your day, so you're always paddling the best conditions the park offers rather than a fixed schedule.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What are the two different kayaking routes on this trip?
The Awaroa to Bark Bay route starts at Awaroa and visits Shag Harbour, then paddles south through the Tonga Island Marine Reserve and Tonga Arches to finish at Bark Bay. The Onetahuti to Anchorage route starts at Onetahuti, heads out to Tonga Island for seal encounters, and finishes at Anchorage. Both follow the tide timetable, so the operator chooses which route offers the best conditions on your departure day.
Will I see fur seals on this kayaking trip?
Yes. Both routes focus on the Tonga Island Marine Reserve, where you'll encounter NZ fur seals. The operator is one of only three authorised to undertake marine mammal viewing from sea kayaks at Tonga, so the viewing is managed within the reserve's protocols.
How long does the kayaking actually take?
You're paddling for around eight hours. That includes the time on the water with your guide, the picnic lunch on a beach, and exploration of the granite arches and lagoons.
What's included in the lunch?
Lunch is a freshly baked roll filled with local produce, a sweet snack, fruit, fresh plunger coffee and local juice, served on one of the beaches during the paddle.
Do I need to arrange my own transport to the kayaking start point?
Water taxi transfers to and from the kayaking start points are included. If you're staying in Nelson and need transport from there to the tour, that needs to be booked separately.
What's the minimum age for this kayaking trip?
The minimum age is 12 years old. The activity suits all fitness levels, and service animals are allowed.
