You pick the route, the pace, and where to stop on Lake Wānaka

Self-guided kayaking on Lake Wānaka near Wanaka Township, where you paddle 9–12km back to the starting point after transport drops you at a remote launch. The operator provides kayak, life jacket, paddle, dry bag and a map. The rest is yours to decide. You must be a confident swimmer and experienced kayaker capable of self-rescue, as this is a remote, unguided paddle.

The experience

The morning starts with transport from Wanaka Township to your launch point on the lake. The operator briefs you on paddle distance and direction, hands you a kayak, safety gear and a map, then leaves you to it. The paddle back runs 9–12km depending on where you start: long enough to feel like a real crossing, short enough to fit a morning. You're on your own the whole way, which means no guide narrating the shoreline, no group pace to match, no schedule beyond the light.

What you do with that freedom is up to you. Paddle the shoreline, cut across to the islands, jump off a jetty, or beach the kayak and picnic on the rocks. The map shows you the way back, but the route itself is yours. This works only if you know how to paddle. The operator is clear about that. You need to be a confident swimmer (200m minimum), able to handle a capsize and self-rescue, and experienced enough that a remote lake on your own doesn't rattle you. First-time kayakers don't belong here.

The whole outing runs about three hours from the moment you leave the dock. That includes the paddle out, whatever you choose to do on the water, and the paddle back. Transport is one-way: the operator gets you to the start and you return under your own power.

Is this one for you?Book this if you're an experienced kayaker comfortable paddling alone on open water and confident in your ability to self-rescue. The remote, unguided format is what makes the freedom possible (there's no guide, no group, no fixed route), so it suits paddlers who know what they're doing and want to set their own pace and stops.

Do I need kayaking experience to book this?

Yes. You must be a confident kayaker with prior experience, able to swim at least 200 metres and capable of self-rescuing if you capsize. This is a remote, unguided paddle, so the operator does not accept first-time or inexperienced paddlers.
