The Experience

The flight begins with pickup and heads straight out over the Kaikōura Whale Sanctuary, where the underwater Kaikōura Canyon creates a marine hotspot. Nutrient-filled upwellings draw Sperm whales—the largest toothed whales in the world—along with Humpback whales, Blue whales and Southern Right whales. The guide points out Dusky dolphins and New Zealand fur seals along the coastline as the helicopter moves through the aerial route.

The hour concludes with a landing atop the Seaward Kaikōura Ranges, where the view opens across the peaks and back out to the ocean. Lifejackets and headsets are provided throughout, and the guide narrates the whole route in English. The flight is wheelchair accessible, and infants can ride on an adult's lap.
