The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the sound — not just birds, but this layered chorus that seemed to come from every direction along the Kowhai River valley. My llama (his name was Pablo, which still makes me smile) kept glancing back at me like he wanted to make sure I was keeping up. The air had that damp, earthy smell you get after rain, even though it hadn’t rained in days. Our guide, Hana, grew up around here and pointed out a tui singing above us — she could mimic its call almost perfectly. I tried too, but mine came out more like a squeak. She laughed and so did the rest of us.

We followed the riverbank, sometimes right on the pebbles where you could see tiny fish darting in the shallows. There were spots where the trees closed in and you could feel the temperature drop — cool shade and the texture of moss under your hand if you reached out. At one point we stopped because someone spotted a pair of fantails flitting right by our heads. Pablo didn’t care; he was busy munching on something green I couldn’t identify (Hana said it was safe for him). It’s funny how walking with an animal slows you down in a good way — you notice things you’d usually miss.

I didn’t expect how much I’d enjoy just listening to Hana talk about how the woodland is protected now, or watching her show a little kid how to lead his own llama without pulling too hard. There was space for everyone — families with strollers, even someone in a wheelchair who seemed to be having as much fun as anyone else. We didn’t rush; nobody cared about time or distance really. The trek isn’t long (an hour or so), but I felt like I’d stepped into a quieter world for a bit. That feeling stuck with me after we left — still does.
