The experience
The tour opens at a boutique winery where you'll sample several house-produced wines, then sit down for a private tasting flight of 6 or 7 different wines presented by the winery staff. From there you move to a beer and cider stop where you choose your own drinks by the glass, then finish at a gin producer for a flight of three different gins, each served with its own mixer. Cheese platters and fresh bread come out at the stops, so you're tasting alongside food that actually pairs with what's in your glass.
Your guide speaks English and leads the group through each stop. The minivan is air-conditioned and picks you up from your Napier hotel or the port if you're arriving by ship. The group stays small, and a souvenir rounds out the experience. You need to be 18 to participate in the tastings under New Zealand law.
