The experience
The tour starts with a 7:30 am pickup near SkyCity Hamilton Central and a two-hour drive to Wai-O-Tapu. You arrive in time to see the Lady Knox Geyser erupt at 10:15 am. The geyser shoots 10 to 20 meters high and runs for about an hour. Before that, you walk the Mud Pool, where thick grey mud bubbles constantly from underground geothermal activity. The park's walking trails then take you through Champagne Pool and other colored hot springs that make Wai-O-Tapu's landscape look otherworldly.
After Wai-O-Tapu, the route heads to Redwoods Forest Whakarewarewa near Rotorua, where Californian Coast Redwoods planted in 1901 tower above free walking trails. The forest offers a quiet contrast to the geothermal park. A short stop in Tirau breaks up the drive. The town is known for its corrugated iron sheep and dog buildings, and there's time for coffee or a bathroom break. From there, you travel to Blue Spring in Putāruru, a crystal-clear natural spring that supplies about 70 percent of New Zealand's bottled water. The spring sits along the Te Waihou Walkway, which winds through native bush beside the Waihou River.
The return to Hamilton happens in the afternoon, with drop-offs at different hotels along the way. The full day runs twelve hours including driving, self-guided walks at each site, and lunch.
