The experience
You arrive at Mount Maunganui's Main Beach and meet your instructor, who runs through a safety briefing and ocean awareness basics before you touch a board. The lesson starts on the sand: you'll learn the paddle motion, how to position yourself on the board, and the mechanics of standing up. All demonstrated step-by-step so you can see exactly what to do before the water. This matters because surfing looks simple until you try it, and knowing the motion beforehand cuts the confusion once you're in the shallows.
Then you paddle out into the shallow water where your instructor watches you catch waves and practice the techniques you just learned. With a maximum of eight people per group, you get real feedback on what you're doing right and what to adjust, not a shout from the beach but actual guidance as you're learning. The lesson runs 1.5 hours total, which is long enough to feel the rhythm of the ocean and catch multiple waves, but short enough that your arms don't give out before you've had a real go at it.
All equipment is provided: surfboard, wetsuit, and sunscreen. Bring swimwear, a towel, and the willingness to get wet. The beach is beginner-friendly by design, which means gentler waves and a sandy bottom, not a place where you're fighting heavy conditions on your first day. Ages 10 and up with basic swimming ability can join. The instructors are used to working with that range.

Is this one for you?Small groups of up to eight mean you're not competing for the instructor's attention, so pick this lesson if you want real feedback as you learn rather than generic tips shouted to a crowd. The 1.5-hour format gives you time to move from theory on the sand to actually catching waves, without the fatigue of a longer session on your first day.
