Kayaking & Electric Mountain Biking in Akaroa
Two ways to move through an extinct volcanic crater in a single morning.
This combined activity in Akaroa pairs electric mountain biking (8:30am–11am) with sea kayaking (11:30am–2pm) in a small group led by local guides. You pedal up to the crater rim for panoramic views, then paddle through the marine reserve's turquoise waters. The schedule is timed for cruise ship passengers; children from age 12 are welcome, and moderate fitness is required.
The Experience
You arrive in Akaroa with a half-day free and no rental car. The activity starts with an electric mountain bike ride at 8:30am—the motor handles the steep climbs, so you focus on the trail and the views opening up as you gain elevation. The route takes you from sea level to the top of the crater rim over roughly two and a half hours. A guide rides with the group, which stays small enough that you can ask questions and stop for photos without the pace breaking. Helmets, a high-visibility vest and gloves are provided.
By 11am you're back at the base with time to transfer to the kayaks. The second half begins at 11:30am on the water—you paddle through the crater's marine reserve in a sit-on-top kayak, moving through turquoise water that sits inside the extinct volcanic cone. A nature guide leads the paddle, pointing out the reserve and its wildlife. The kayak portion runs until 2pm, which is why the timing works for cruise ship passengers: the schedule is built around tender windows, so you can complete both activities and return to the ship without a gap. Snacks and on-water photos are included.
The two activities give you the crater from different angles—the high vantage from the bike, the intimate water-level view from the kayak. The electric bikes mean you're not fighting the climbs; the guide handles navigation and safety on both. Small groups are deliberate: they keep the experience manageable and give you room to talk with the guides throughout the day. Moderate fitness is needed for both activities; the electric assist on the bike helps, but you're still pedaling and paddling for several hours.

How do I get to Akaroa if I don't have a rental car?
Public transportation options operate near Akaroa. The activity itself includes the guide and the equipment; you'll need to arrange your own transport to the meeting point, or check with the operator about pickup availability when you book.
What's the electric mountain bike like if I haven't ridden one before?
The electric motor assists on climbs, so you control the pedaling effort—you're not fighting steep terrain on your own. The guide will make sure you're comfortable with the bike before you start, and the group pace allows for questions and adjustments.
Will I see wildlife on the kayak portion?
The sea kayak paddle goes through a marine reserve inside the volcanic crater. A nature guide leads the paddle and points out what the reserve holds, though what you encounter depends on the day and the season.
Is this suitable for someone who's never kayaked?
The kayak used is a sit-on-top model, which is stable and forgiving for beginners. The guide leads the paddle at a manageable pace. Moderate fitness is required for the full half-day because you're active for roughly five and a half hours across both activities.
Can I do just the biking or just the kayaking instead of both?
This product combines both activities as a single experience. The schedule is designed around the two-part flow, and the operator builds the timing around that pairing.
What age can children join?
Children are welcome from age 12. They'll need to be comfortable on a bike and in a kayak, and meet the moderate fitness requirement for the full duration.
