The experience

The journey starts with a coach ride from Nelson (1 hour) or Motueka (20 minutes) to Kaiteriteri, then a 2-hour boat cruise along the granite coast to Tōtaranui. From there you walk 2.5 hours through native forest and along golden-sand beaches to reach Awaroa, where you stay the first night in an ensuite room at Meadowbank Homestead with hot showers and a cooked dinner waiting.

Day two is when you meet the kayak. After a 4-hour walk from Awaroa to Onetahuti Beach, your guide gives you full instructions and a safety brief, then settles you into a stable double kayak. From there it's roughly 4 hours paddling down the coast to Torrent Bay, exploring secret coves and islands. If the weather allows, you paddle out to the seal colony on Tonga Island. Lunch happens on a sheltered beach. You sleep the second night at Torrent Bay Lodge, also ensuite with meals included.

The final day is another 4 hours on the water, paddling through sheltered azure waters to explore more of the sculpted granite coast. Your guide designs the route around the tides and your interests and abilities, building in a lunch break to stretch your legs or simply rest. A coach meets you at Marahau or Kaiteriteri to return you to Motueka or Nelson.

Is this one for you?Small groups work well here because the guide adjusts the kayaking route and walking pace to the tides and everyone's abilities, so a tight group moves together without anyone holding back or rushing ahead. If you want a structured itinerary with set times, this one is flexible instead. The trade-off is that your day unfolds around natural conditions rather than a clock.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (12 to 14 years). Children under 12 can't be included in the booking.

What's the kayaking experience like if I've never paddled before?

The guide gives full instruction and a safety brief before you get on the water, and you paddle a stable double kayak, so beginners are welcome. The guide designs each day around your abilities and the tides, and paddling stretches across roughly 4 hours each of days two and three with lunch breaks built in.

Are the lodges comfortable, or is this roughing it?

Both lodges are beachfront properties with ensuite rooms, hot showers and cooked meals included each night. You're not camping or carrying gear. The operator handles the details so you can focus on paddling and walking.

What happens if the weather turns bad during the kayaking?

Your guide designs each day around the tides and conditions, so the route can adjust. The itinerary is built to work with the coast's natural patterns rather than against them, and sheltered waters are available if needed.

How much walking is there, and is it difficult?

Day one includes a 2.5-hour walk through forest and along beaches to Awaroa. Day two starts with a 4-hour walk from Awaroa to Onetahuti Beach before the kayaking begins. The product is suitable for all fitness levels, and the guide adjusts the pace to the group.
