The experience

The tour starts at the local markets (fruit, vegetable and fish sellers, plus souvenir stalls), then moves to a chocolate shop where you can taste and buy at a discount. From there you climb to a panoramic point overlooking the islets, lagoon and Anse Vata beach, where two large guns and a military telecommunications base sit on the ridge. You get about an hour of free time to explore architecture and Melanesian art on your own (the site closes Mondays), then head down to Anse Vata beach itself, a calm stretch with a restaurant and aquatic center.

A gourmet lunch at one of the city's best restaurants is the centerpiece of the day: the operator promises your taste buds will be fully engaged. After eating, you take a short walk through a park in central Noumea to aid digestion, where you'll spot the national bird, the Cagou, among other species (also closed Mondays). The final stop is a brief visit to Baie des Citrons, the busiest bay in the area, lined with restaurants, bars and ice cream shops.

The whole route is covered in a private air-conditioned vehicle with WiFi on board. Your guide speaks English or French and can adjust the pace. You can be guided through each stop or explore on your own. The tour works for families with infants and small children, who can travel in a pram or stroller, and for anyone regardless of fitness level.
