Follow clues through medieval Utrecht to uncover the truth behind a cockatrice sighting.

Utrecht Monster Mystery is a self-guided exploration game played on the Questo app, taking you through 7 landmarks in Utrecht's medieval center to solve an investigation into monster sightings. Download the app, activate your quest with a booking code, and start at the Speelklok Museum. You control the pace, pausing to explore, eat, or photograph as you move between stops. The game weaves real history (a vanished cathedral, an active Teutonic Order, a poem carved into canal cobblestones) into an eccentric storyline with witness accounts and hidden ciphers to decode.

The experience

You download the Questo app, enter your booking code, and begin at the Speelklok Museum. From there, clues and a map guide you to seven stops through Utrecht's medieval heart: the Dom Tower, a Teutonic Knights compound, the Centraal Museum, and lesser-known corners where a woman bricked herself into a church wall and a poem appears one letter per week in the cobblestones of a canal. Each stop presents a puzzle (a cipher to crack, a riddle to solve, a hidden detail to spot) that unlocks the next clue. You're not following a guide or a fixed schedule. You move at your own rhythm, spending as long as you want at each location.

The investigation unfolds through witness statements and historical threads woven into the game. A medieval military order still operates in the city. A cathedral vanished in a single storm. A UFO sits on a building made from 22 million bricks. These are real stories most visitors never encounter, and the game uses them to build a narrative around the Monster of Utrecht: a cockatrice sighting that pulls you deeper into the city's hidden layers. Decoding the ciphers and questioning the eccentric witnesses becomes the way you move through the landmarks, so the sightseeing and the puzzle-solving are one thing.

You can share one device with up to three people, or get separate access per team if you want to compete. The whole experience runs about 70 minutes if you move steadily, but you can pause anytime to grab lunch, take photos, or linger at a site that catches your interest. The app keeps the clues and map with you, so you won't get lost between stops.

Is this one for you? This is a self-guided app experience, so you move at your own pace and don't follow a guide or a fixed itinerary: ideal if you want to explore Utrecht's medieval center on your own terms and solve puzzles as you go. If you prefer a live guide walking you through the city and explaining the history directly, this game-based format won't be the right fit.

Top questions

How do I start the Utrecht Monster Mystery game once I arrive?

Download the Questo app before you go, then activate your quest using the booking code you receive. Start playing at the Speelklok Museum, where the first clue appears in the app and directs you to your next stop.

What are the 7 landmarks I'll visit on this puzzle tour?

The stops include the Speelklok Museum, Dom Tower, Centraal Museum, a Teutonic Knights compound, and three other locations throughout Utrecht's medieval center where clues and historical details are embedded in the city itself.

Can I do this tour with a group, or is it just for individuals?

You can share one device with up to three people on the same team, or purchase separate access per team if you want to compete against each other while solving the puzzles.

What if I want to stop for lunch or take a break during the game?

You control the pace entirely. Pause anytime to eat, photograph, or explore a location more deeply. The app waits for you, and you resume whenever you're ready.
