The Experience
Start at Vredenburgplein, the heart of Utrecht's center, where your guide meets you at the scheduled time. On Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays the square hosts a market with fish stands and stroopwafels prepared in front of you. Your guide can adjust the route to include it if you want. From there you walk through the city's oldest quarters, learning how Utrecht began nearly 2,000 years ago as the northern border of the Roman Empire and evolved into a major medieval trading hub.
The Oudegracht, a 2-km canal running north to south, is the centerpiece. Maartensbrug, the bridge near the Dom Tower, dates to 1404 and crosses the part of the canal that existed in Roman times. Along the water you'll see the wharf cellars, over 730 of them, originally dug from the 12th century onward so merchants could store goods straight from ships. After falling into disrepair in the 20th century, they've been restored and now house restaurants and cafés that spill onto the wharfs as terraces. The atmosphere shifts completely in the evening with the lights reflecting off the water. You'll also pass through Pandhof, a 15th-century monastery garden turned public courtyard, where culinary herbs and medicinal plants still grow around a statue of a reading canon.
The Dom Tower, Utrecht's pride and the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, stands where the city originated. It was part of the Cathedral of Saint Martin but became a free-standing tower in 1674 when the unfinished nave collapsed. The tour wraps at Vredenburgplein, though you can continue with your guide to Oudaen castle for a beer tasting (an optional add-on) and stay on afterward if you choose.
