Riddles guide you past 800 years of Dutch politics without a guide in sight.

This self-guided walking activity in The Hague uses an app-based scavenger hunt with riddles and trivia to lead you through the city's landmarks on your own schedule. You download the Explorial app, enter a game code, and solve puzzles at the Binnenhof, Noordeinde Palace and Lange Voorhout as you move between them. The game keeps score and runs around two hours at whatever pace suits your group.

The experience

You start at the Plein, the grand square in the heart of The Hague, download the Explorial app to your smartphone and enter a 6-digit code sent by text and booking-platform message. From there, the riddles take over. No guide meets you, no fixed start time waits. You and your group set off on foot whenever you're ready, solving puzzles that pull you from one landmark to the next. The app marks locations on a map so you always know where you are, and you can take breaks, loop back or slow down without affecting anyone else's pace.

The route circles the Binnenhof, the medieval castle courtyard where Dutch parliament has sat for 800 years, with riddles playing around the Ridderzaal and its Gothic towers. Next comes Noordeinde Palace, the King's working residence, where trivia peeks behind the royal railings. Then the Lange Voorhout opens up: a double row of lime trees lined with embassies and grand mansions, with clues hidden among them. Around two hours covers the walk at a stately pace. When the final answer lands, a leaderboard delivers its verdict and you can compete against the city's high score or just against your own group.

You'll need a fully charged smartphone with active mobile data and the app downloaded before you arrive. Disable any VPN and avoid city Wi-Fi, as they cause the app to disconnect. The game works in 24 languages including English, French, German, Spanish and Italian. You choose yours when you start. Entrance fees are not required. All puzzles relate to public areas of the sights. If bad weather or illness stops you, you can reschedule for another day, switch to a different city or request a refund.
