The experience

You board a luxury coach at Rotterdam Cruise Terminal or from the city center and travel 40 minutes south to Keukenhof, the world's largest spring flower garden. The 79-acre park holds approximately 7 million flower bulbs planted annually: mostly tulips, but also hyacinths, daffodils, lilies, roses, carnations and irises arranged across themed pavilions and winding paths. Your entrance ticket is included, along with a map and information leaflet in English, Spanish, Italian, French or German.

An English-speaking guide travels with the group and provides commentary about Dutch horticultural heritage and the seasonal displays. You spend the bulk of the afternoon exploring at your own pace: strolling the gardens, discovering the bulb displays, and taking in the water features and art installations. The gardens are open only from late March through mid-May, so this is a narrow window to see them.

Return times are fixed to match your plans: a 2 PM departure gets you back to Rotterdam Central Station by 3:30 PM and the Cruise Terminal by 4 PM. A 5 PM departure arrives at Central Station by 6:30 PM and the terminal by 7 PM. If you're sailing with Holland America Line, a special 1 PM departure is available, returning you to the terminal by 2 PM. Children from age 4 are welcome. Infants can travel in a stroller or sit on an adult's lap.
