The experience
The route starts near Rotterdam Central Station and heads into the polder landscape that surrounds the city: the flat, water-crossed farmland that defines the Dutch countryside. You'll ride along the river Rotte, cross locks and dams, and pass through areas that sit as low as 7.67 meters below sea level. The terrain is flat and the pace is steady. The guide stops at parks, lakes and viewpoints rather than rushing through them. Windmills, old farmhouses dating back to 1666, forests and never-ending fields make up the scenery, along with horses, sheep, cows, ducks and storks that graze or wade freely in the fields and canals.
You'll visit several parks and water areas on the route: a 46-hectare lake formed by peat extraction in the 17th and 18th centuries, now a sailing and rowing hub; a smaller lake in Kralingen surrounded by forest and used for watersports; and the oldest city park, built in 1769 near Rotterdam's original port. The guide points out details like the bat habitat in the northwestern park, home to five bat species, and the history of the Old Harbor area, where whale fat was once processed into lamp oil. A drink is built into the tour, offered during or after the ride.
Bikes are not included in the tour price, so you'll arrange a rental separately or bring your own. At checkout, choose between a standard bike and an e-bike. The e-bike option makes the flat terrain even easier if you prefer less pedaling effort. Groups are capped at four riders, though multiple small groups may be combined on the same departure. The tour runs in English, French, Czech, Russian and several other languages with a live guide.
