The Experience

You're standing in a narrow Amsterdam canal house on Oudezijds Voorburgwal, the kind of building that looks like every other one on the street from outside. Then you climb. The stairs are tight, the ceilings low, and the rooms get smaller as you go up — living quarters, a kitchen with its original hearth, bedsteads tucked into alcoves. And then the attic opens up, and there it is: a full Catholic church, complete with an altar, an organ, and wooden pews, all fitted into the space where you'd expect to find rafters and dust.

This is Our Lord in the Attic Museum, and it exists because of a specific moment in Dutch history. In 1663, when celebrating mass was prohibited, the authorities in Amsterdam chose not to enforce it. The church became a symbol of something the Netherlands had already decided: that people could believe what they wanted. The museum, which opened in the 1880s, is the oldest in the city after the Rijksmuseum, and it's preserved almost entirely as it was — not a reconstruction, but the actual building, with its actual furniture, its actual stairs, its actual hiding place.
