You're standing at Singel no. 7, and the boat is already there: a narrow, elegant salon boat called Sophie, built in 1911, waiting to take no more than twelve of you into the quieter parts of Amsterdam that most canal tours skip. Captain Boudewijn Metzelaar, known as Captain Bow, is an Amsterdam native who's spent his life on these waterways, and he doesn't work from a script. Depending on what you want to see, he'll tailor the route: the canal belt if you're new to the city, the smallest canals if you want to feel like you've ducked away from the crowds, the Amstel river and the eastern maritime area if you're curious about how Amsterdam actually works beyond the postcards.

The boat itself is the thing that makes this different. Because Sophie is narrow and sits low in the water, you'll pass under bridges that bigger tour boats can't fit beneath, and you'll slide into canals where the facades are so close you can almost touch them. You'll see the Jordaan district (named after the French word for garden, with streets named after flowers), and pass the Maritime Museum in what used to be an Admiralty warehouse, where a full-scale replica of an East India Trading Company ship sits frozen in the water. The Magere Brug, Amsterdam's most famous bridge, gets explained not as a fact but as a story. The Red Light District comes up too, and Captain Bow talks about it plainly, the way a local does, without the tour-guide distance. There's the Mint Tower, which briefly held the republic's money, and Brouwersgracht, where all the beer got brewed during Amsterdam's golden age. The smallest house in the city appears: built narrow on purpose because taxes were charged by facade width, and the builder was making a point about it.

Throughout it all, there's an open bar with local beers, top-shelf spirits, soft drinks, and hot drinks. Captain Bow makes what he calls a killer G&T with local gin. Snacks (sweet and savory) come steady. There's a WC on board, and whether you want to sit inside or out, the boat is fitted for Dutch weather, which means you're covered either way. The whole thing runs six days a week with Captain Bow at the helm. Saturdays, one of his trusted friends takes over. Groups stay small enough that you're not competing for space or the captain's attention, and the atmosphere stays warm instead of feeling like a cattle run through the city.

If you show up without preferences, Captain Bow will build a route that gives you an overview of the canal belt, some of the less-traveled waterways, the Amstel, and the maritime quarter.
