The Experience

We were already drifting past the first glowing sculpture on the Amstel before I realized how quiet it felt out there — just the hum of the old saloon boat and a few muffled laughs from other passengers. Our guide, who introduced himself as Bram (he had that easy Dutch way of talking), pointed out how each artwork was part of this year’s “Legacy” theme. I tried to snap a photo but my phone fogged up from the warmth inside versus the cold outside. The windows kept steaming up, actually — which made it feel even cozier somehow.

I didn’t expect to care so much about the stories behind these installations. One piece looked like floating lanterns; Bram explained it was about memories passed down through families. Someone near us asked if that’s a Dutch thing and he just grinned, “Everyone has stories they want to keep alive.” The mulled wine helped too — spicy, sweet, and honestly stronger than I thought it’d be. My friend went for hot chocolate and managed to spill half on her gloves (she claims it was worth it). We shared a stroopwafel that was still warm in the middle.

The city lights outside mixed with all these wild colors from the festival — sometimes you’d catch a glimpse of someone cycling by on the canal edge, bundled up against the wind, totally unfazed by all our gawking. At one point we passed under a bridge lit up like something out of a dream; everyone got quiet for a second. I still think about that view when I picture Amsterdam at night. The cruise lasted just over an hour but it felt like time slowed down once we were out there.
