The Experience

First thing I noticed. There’s this hush right behind the clatter of bikes near Amsterdam Central Station. Our guide, Pieter, handed me a yellow bike that looked like it’d seen some stories. He grinned and said, “Don’t worry, everyone wobbles at first.” He wasn’t kidding. I nearly took out a flower pot before we even reached Herengracht. The air smelled faintly sweet (maybe waffles?), or just spring in the city. We set off in a loose line, bells dinging here and there.

I didn’t expect to feel so… inside the city. Not just looking at it but sort of gliding through it. We stopped outside the Anne Frank House (Pieter told us about his grandma seeing the lines as a kid) and then drifted into Jordaan’s narrow lanes. There was this old man on his stoop who nodded at us. I tried to nod back but almost lost my balance again. In Vondelpark we took a break. Someone passed around stroopwafels that stuck to my fingers in the best way. Sunlight flickered through big trees and for a second everything felt slow.

The Rijksmuseum was busy but from our bikes it looked almost quiet, like it belonged to another time. We crossed Magere Brug, the Skinny Bridge, which really is as narrow as people say (I held my breath). Somewhere along Herengracht, Pieter pointed out crooked canal houses leaning over the water like they were eavesdropping on us. I still think about that view sometimes when I hear bike bells back home.
