Horns, drums, conch shells, and bells fill the monastery during the ritual. After the prayers, you walk through the village to see how people live their daily lives, then sit down with a local Tibetan family for breakfast and an introduction to traditional Tibetan cuisine. Mr. Thupten explains the history and cultural significance of each dish as you eat.
The morning continues at a Buddhist monastery where a young monk answers your questions about monastic life and education. You photograph the serene grounds and interior, then move to a second monastery to learn the meanings of prayer wheels, prayer flags, stupas, and other symbols central to daily Buddhist practice. Inside, you're free to take photos and videos.
In the afternoon, you visit another Tibetan village to see a carpet workshop where artisans make Tibetan carpets by hand, Mr. Thupten walks you through each step of the process.
