Cross Mirgin-La Pass and stand beneath Kanchenjunga’s towering glaciers away from the crowds

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is a 15–18 day mountain trek from Kathmandu to Pang Pema in Nepal's remote northeast, crossing Mirgin-La pass at 4,725 meters and passing views of six major peaks including Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Lhotse and Everest. The package includes an English-speaking government-trained guide, all meals and accommodation, domestic flights to the trailhead, hotel stays in Kathmandu, and trekking gear; you choose between the Base Camp route or the full Circuit Trek at checkout. Moderate fitness is required; the trek is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy.

  • Start trek through rhododendron forests
  • Pass through quaint villages

The Experience

This trek starts in Kathmandu with a briefing and permit paperwork handled for you, then a domestic flight takes you to Taplejung, the actual trailhead. From there the route winds through rhododendron forests and villages as elevation rises, with your guide managing the pace so your body acclimates gradually. The trail crosses Mirgin-La pass and a glacier before reaching Pang Pema, the base camp where Kanchenjunga dominates the view alongside Yalungkang, Jannu, Makalu, Lhotse and Everest on the horizon. Unlike the Base Camp routes on the south side of Everest, this region sees far fewer trekkers—the solitude is the point.

Your accommodation shifts between guesthouses and teahouses in villages along the route and a hotel in Kathmandu before and after the trek. Three meals a day are provided throughout, and a comprehensive medical kit travels with the guide. You get a sleeping bag and down jacket for the higher elevations (both returned after the trek), a trekking map, and all the permits the Nepali government requires. The guide is trained by Nepal's government and speaks English; German-speaking guides are also available. Transportation covers the domestic flights between Kathmandu and Bhiratgar, all surface travel to and from the trailhead, and hotel and airport pickups.

The trek demands at least moderate physical fitness—the altitude, the daily distance, and the terrain are real. This is not a walk; it is a sustained mountain trek over two weeks. Staff insurance and a medical kit are included, but travel and health insurance are your responsibility and mandatory. Tips for guides and porters are not included in the price. The two options at checkout are the Base Camp route itself or the full Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek; both follow the same structure of flights, guide, meals and accommodation, so the choice is the route you want to walk.

Is this one for you?Choose this trek if you want the Himalayan altitude and the views of six major peaks without the crowds on the Everest side—the remoteness is what makes the solitude possible. The fixed itinerary, included guide, and pre-arranged logistics mean you walk without building the trip yourself, which is what lets you focus on the altitude and the terrain instead of the details.
