The experience
You arrive in Bardia and settle into your safari lodge in the buffer zone, then start the same afternoon with a village tour, bird watching and sunset viewing along the Khata Corridor. The naturalist briefs you on what to expect over the next three nights. Dinner and a chance to relax at the lodge follows, with an optional BBQ on the premises.
Day two is a full-day jeep safari. You leave early after breakfast and travel deep into the national park in a four-wheel-drive vehicle with your jungle guide, stopping at viewing towers and going off-road to explore the sal forest. The guide knows the animal territories and positions the jeep near water holes where tigers hide in the bush. You'll have a packed lunch and Nepali tea and cookies while you wait and watch. The jeep covers more ground than walking, letting you see a wider stretch of the park. You're back at the lodge by 6 PM for the evening Tharu culture dance show.
Day three is a full-day jungle walk, the closer way to see wildlife. Walking lets you move through grasslands and rivers with your guide pointing out plant and animal life and explaining the habitats. The walk runs 4 to 5 hours depending on how the animals are moving and how far you want to go. Most of the time you'll be waiting near water holes or in a machan (a raised platform) for tigers, rhinos, elephants and leopards to appear. The longer you wait, the better your chances. You return to the lodge after sunset. On your final morning, you can walk the village and park area on your own before departure, or leave after breakfast or lunch depending on your schedule.
