The experience
Shivapuri National Park sits on the northern edge of the Kathmandu Valley at 2,732 meters, home to over five hundred native plant and animal species. The route begins with a visit to Budhanilkantha Temple before entering the park's jungle, where you walk past green terraces and rural Nepali villages. The hike itself is easy (the operator rates it suitable for all fitness levels), and the trail passes through forest thick enough that the mountain views come as a real break in the canopy rather than a constant backdrop.
Chisopani, where you spend the first night, sits at the gateway between Shivapuri and the routes toward Langtang and Gosainkunda. From there you can see the snow-capped peaks of the Langtang range, and on clear mornings the view extends to Mount Everest, Annapurna and Manaslu. The second day's trek down to Nagarkot and then to Changu Narayan temple (perched on a hilltop and among Nepal's oldest) passes through villages where the medieval architecture of the surrounding settlements is still the everyday backdrop. Your guide handles the route and the pacing. Breakfast, lunch and dinner come at each stop, and you sleep in the villages themselves rather than returning to Kathmandu each night.

Top questions
What's the hike actually like on Shivapuri National Park?
The route is easy and rated suitable for all fitness levels. You walk through the park's native jungle and past terraced hillsides and rural villages, with the steepest sections on the descent toward Nagarkot. The altitude gain is gradual (Shivapuri Peak itself sits at 2,732 meters), and the pace is set by your guide.
Can I see Mount Everest from this trek?
Yes, on clear mornings from Chisopani you can see Mount Everest along with Annapurna, Manaslu and the Langtang range. The views depend on weather and cloud cover, but the Langtang peaks are visible most days during the trek.
Where do I sleep during the three days?
You stay two nights in the trekking villages themselves: one in Chisopani and one in Nagarkot. Accommodation, breakfast, lunch and dinner are all included, so you don't need to arrange meals or lodging separately.
What is Changu Narayan temple?
Changu Narayan sits on a hilltop and is one of Nepal's oldest temples. The village surrounding it preserves medieval Nepali architecture, and the trek ends there on day three after descending from Nagarkot.
Do I need any special gear or equipment?
Bring comfortable hiking boots, layers for changing temperatures at altitude, and sun protection. The operator provides transportation to the trailhead and an English-speaking guide. You carry a daypack with water and personal items during the walks.
