The experience

The trek begins with a short drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal, where the trail enters Shivapuri National Park, Nepal's youngest national park, and climbs through pine and oak forest toward Chisapani. The first day is a 5- to 6-hour walk on a gradually rising trail. You'll hear birds and spot wildlife in the forest, and by evening you reach Chisapani lodge with panoramic views of the Himalayas and the valley below. The Sherpa ethnic group lives in this area, and the lodge sits at 2,115 meters.

Day two is a 6-hour trek from Chisapani to Nagarkot. You walk through charming forest trails for about three hours to Chauki Bhanjyang, where you stop for lunch, then continue another three hours to Nagarkot at 2,195 meters. From there you see the full Himalayan range stretching from Dhaulagiri in the west past Everest to Kanchenjunga in the east: the view emerges at sunrise and again at sunset. Nagarkot is one of Nepal's most popular viewpoints for this reason.

On the final day you wake early for the sunrise, then hike for a couple of hours down to Chagunarayan temple, an old and artistic UNESCO World Heritage site. After visiting the temple you stop at Bhaktapur Darbar Square before driving back to Kathmandu. A porter carries luggage (one porter per two trekkers), and your English-speaking guide leads the entire trek. All meals, accommodation and the National Park permit are included.
