The experience

You start at your hotel in Walvis Bay, where the operator picks you up in an air-conditioned vehicle. The morning takes you past the salt mine (Africa's largest evaporation pond, its waters stained pink by algae), and along the lagoon where thousands of flamingos and pelicans gather. At Pelican Point, where a lighthouse marks a 50,000-seal colony, you unload the kayaks and paddle into the bay. The seals swim around you, curious and close. The kayaks are modern, unsinkable and stable enough for first-timers. The guide coaches you on handling before you launch, and everyone wears a life jacket. Once you're back on shore, the operator serves cold drinks and sandwiches.

The afternoon is the dune section. You drive south along the beach toward Sandwich Harbour, where the dune belt meets the sea and waves carve away the sand at high tide. The route is a roller coaster of climbs and descents (the guides know where to push and where to hold back), and from the viewpoints at the top, the desert stretches unbroken to the horizon. The guides point out how plants and animals have adapted to this harsh, shifting landscape, and they search the dunes for wildlife. The whole day is 7 to 8 hours.

If you're arriving on a cruise ship, your pickup starts an hour after docking, and the tour departs no later than an hour and a half after that window opens. German-speaking guides are available but allocated on a first-come basis and not guaranteed on every departure.
