The experience
The boat leaves Walvis Bay Waterfront at 9am and heads straight into the Atlantic, where seagulls and pelicans meet you before you've cleared the harbor. The guide points out the Namibian Skeleton Coast and its history as the vessel moves toward Pelican Point Peninsula, where a seal colony hauls out on the rocks close enough to watch. Between the wildlife sightings (dolphins are common, whales less so but possible) the skipper makes stops that let you take in the scale of the ocean without rushing through it.
At 11am, the crew sets out fresh Namibian oysters, sparkling wine, sherry, Namibian beer, bottled water, snacks and a light lunch on deck. A dessert platter follows. The meal is not a formal sit-down. It happens as the boat makes its way back to the Waterfront, where the tour ends by midday. The whole arc (departure, wildlife, the seal colony stop, the food and the return) fits inside three to four hours.
Mola Mola has run this same route for more than two decades, which means the crew knows where the animals congregate and when. The boat operates in all weather, so bring layers. The Waterfront has shops and a restaurant if you want to arrive early or linger after. Transfers from guest houses are not included but can be arranged for an extra charge if you ask when you book.
