The experience

You meet the crew at Bagan's Nyaung-Oo Jetty before dawn and board the RV Panorama, a fully air-conditioned teak wood vessel. After a safety briefing, breakfast and blended coffee arrive on the upper deck as the boat heads upstream toward Mandalay. The morning is yours to sit in the sun, watch the Ayeyarwaddy flow past, and settle into the rhythm of river travel.

Lunch, Myanmar cuisine, is served at noon while you're still on the sun deck, and this is when the crew gathers everyone to show the different ways to wrap and wear a longyi, the everyday garment that defines Myanmar dress. They also demonstrate how to apply thanatkha, the fragrant bark paste that appears as a yellow motif on faces throughout the country. You're invited to participate: try the longyi yourself, have the paste applied, and understand why these are not costumes but daily life. The demonstration happens after lunch, so you've eaten and can move freely on deck.

The boat arrives in Mandalay around 5:30pm. You'll watch the sunset from the water before disembarking. The whole journey takes about 12 hours, and the pace is set by the river: no rushing between sites, no schedule of stops. You're on the water the entire time, with the guide available throughout and the crew handling everything else.
