The experience

The guide picks you up from your hotel or chosen point in Maputo and drives you an hour to the main entrance of Maputo Special Reserve. Once inside, you spend 6 hours moving through the park in the vehicle, stopping whenever wildlife appears. The guide knows where to find elephants, giraffes, hippos, zebras, waterbucks, warthogs, crocodiles and the birds the reserve is known for. Each stop is a chance to photograph and listen while the guide explains what you're seeing, the behavior, the habitat, the names of the species.

Midway through the drive, you stop at one of the lakes inside the park for a break that lasts about an hour. This is where you stretch your legs, have coffee, eat lunch and rest before heading back out. After the 6 hours of driving finish, the guide takes you back to Maputo, another hour on the road, and drops you at any point in the city you choose. The whole day, from pickup to return, takes 8 hours.
