The experience
Chefchaouen's weaving workshops sit inside the medina where artisans have worked looms for generations. You'll start with an introduction to Moroccan wool and textile tradition over mint tea and local cookies, then move to the loom itself. The Maalem, a professional weaver, walks you through basic terminology and technique, and you spend 30 minutes practicing on the loom under their guidance. The pace is yours: most people finish in about 90 minutes, but you can stay longer if you want to complete a larger piece and take it home.
A finished square meter takes roughly four hours to weave, so what you make in a single session will be smaller: a scarf, a cushion cover, or the start of something larger. The Maalem works alongside you the whole time, correcting your hand position and showing you how to keep the tension even. You leave with whatever you've woven and the knowledge of how it's done.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French and Arabic.
How long does it actually take to finish a piece I can take home?
A small finished piece takes 30 minutes to an hour on the loom during the class itself. A full square meter (about 3 feet by 3 feet) takes around four hours, so if you want something larger, you'd need to extend your time beyond the standard 90-minute session.
Will the Maalem teach me in English?
Yes. The guide speaks English, Spanish, French and Arabic, so instruction happens in whichever language works for you.
What exactly is a Maalem?
Maalem is the Moroccan term for a master artisan or master craftsperson. In this workshop, the Maalem is a professional weaver who teaches the loom techniques and works with you one-on-one during the class.
Can I bring someone who doesn't want to weave?
The class is built around hands-on weaving practice, so it works best if everyone in your group is participating. The minimum age is 12, and all fitness levels are welcome.
