The experience

The route starts in Fes and climbs into the Cedre Gouraud Forest, where you stop to photograph magot monkeys in their habitat, then passes through the Middle Atlas mountains before dropping into the desert. The drive to Merzouga takes most of the first day, broken by a lunch stop in Zaida (lunch is on your own). Once you arrive, you ride a camel to the camp at sunset, photograph the sand dunes, and settle into a luxury tent with a shower, washbasin and toilet. Dinner and campfire music happen that night. Sleep comes under the stars.

Day two starts with sunrise and breakfast in the camp, both included. On the return to Fes, you visit the Fossils Cooperative for a short walk through the collection, then stop in Midelt for lunch (again, on your own). The drive back to Fes closes the loop. The luxury tent is private if you're traveling as a pair or larger group. Solo travelers share the space with other guests.

Top questions

What's the Cedre Gouraud Forest, and do we really see monkeys there?

Cedre Gouraud Forest is a cedar forest in the Middle Atlas where magot monkeys live freely. The tour includes a stop there specifically to photograph and observe them in their natural setting. They're described as human-friendly.

Is the camel ride hard, or can anyone do it?

The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels according to the operator. The camel ride happens at sunset as part of the arrival at camp. It's a core experience of the desert portion, not optional.

What does the tent camp actually include?

The luxury tent has a shower, washbasin and toilet inside. Dinner and breakfast are both included. Campfire music and stargazing happen the same night. You sleep in the tent under the stars.

Do we have to arrange our own lunch, or is it provided?

Lunches are not included in the price. You'll have lunch breaks in Zaida on day one and Midelt on day two, where you can eat at local restaurants or bring your own food.

What happens at the Fossils Cooperative on the way back?
