The Experience

The air out here smells a bit dusty, but in a good way—like earth after a hot afternoon. Our driver picked us up right on time from our riad in the city center. The drive out took about 25 minutes, just enough to watch the city fade into open land. At the base camp, we got a quick safety talk—nothing too formal, but thorough enough that I felt ready to handle the quad.

Once we started up the engines, you could feel that little jolt of excitement. We zipped past clusters of palm trees and rocky patches, following narrow tracks that wound through Berber villages. Kids waved as we passed by—one even tried to race us on his bike for a minute. Our guide, Youssef, stopped now and then to point out things I’d have missed: a tiny bakery with fresh bread smells drifting out, or a view of the High Atlas mountains peeking through the haze.

About halfway through, we parked the quads and climbed onto camels for a short trek. It’s slower than you’d think—camels sway side to side, so you end up laughing at yourself trying not to wobble. Afterward, we were invited into a local home for mint tea with bread and honey. The tea was sweet and hot; honestly, it tasted even better after all that dust and sun. We sat on woven mats, just soaking in the quiet for a bit.

The last stretch took us across stony desert—nothing but rocks, shrubs, and that big sky overhead. By the time we looped back to base, my shoes were covered in red dust and I couldn’t stop grinning. Our driver was waiting with cold water for us before heading back into Marrakech traffic.
