The experience
Tetouan earned its name as the most Andalusian city in Morocco for a reason: after the Spanish Reconquest expelled Muslims from southern Spain, many settled here and rebuilt the town with the architecture and layout they'd left behind. The Medina of Tétouan, declared a World Heritage Site in 1997, sits on the steep slopes of Jebel Dersa and shows almost no outside influence since its 15th-century reconstruction: the smallest of Morocco's medinas but also the most intact. Walking it with a guide who speaks English, Spanish, French or Arabic means you move through the narrow streets with someone who knows which corners hold the stories.
The tour starts in the Spanish quarter (El Ensanche) and moves through Feddan Park, a pedestrian zone where locals gather rather than a planted garden, with views across the white buildings of the Medina rising up the mountainside. You'll pass through the Jewish quarter and stop to taste the region's cow cheese and nuts before heading into the old Medina itself. The tannery comes next: smaller than the famous ones in Fez but still striking, with leathers dyed in colors made from vegetables and animal sources, mostly soft goat skins. The Jewish cemetery, established 500 years ago on the dramatic slope overlooking the city, holds an estimated 35,000 graves and features tombs with anthropomorphic engravings, a rare detail in Jewish burial grounds. You'll also see the Kasbah from the outside and walk through ElHout souK, where country women sell handmade goods.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French and Arabic.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the Medina of Tetouan and why is it different from other Moroccan medinas?
The Medina of Tétouan is the smallest and most complete of Morocco's old cities, rebuilt in the 15th century by Andalusian refugees expelled by the Spanish Reconquest. Its architecture and layout reflect clear Andalusian influence, and the majority of its buildings have remained untouched by outside influences since then, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Will I see the tannery on this tour, and what makes it worth visiting?
Yes, the tannery is a stop on the walk. Tetouan has a long tradition of leather production, and you'll see the quality and variety of buttery soft leathers, mostly goat skins, processed there. All the colors are created primarily from vegetables and some animal sources, producing results that are striking and unusual.
Can I visit the Jewish cemetery, and what will I see there?
The Jewish cemetery on Mount Dersa's slopes is part of the tour. Established 500 years ago and holding an estimated 35,000 graves, it commands dramatic views over the medina and features many tombs with anthropomorphic engravings, a highly unusual feature for Jewish cemeteries anywhere.
What's included in the tour price, and what should I bring or pay for separately?
The tour includes a multilingual local guide and the private guided walk through all the stops. Food and drinks are not included, though you'll have a stop to taste local cow cheese and nuts as part of the experience.
How long does the tour take, and is it physically demanding?
The tour runs about two and a half hours. It's suitable for all fitness levels, though it involves walking on steep slopes of the Medina and is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.
