The experience

You're picked up from your Rabat hotel or riad and driven north toward Chefchaouen, with a break in Ouezzane along the way. The route climbs into the Rif Mountains, and when you arrive in the blue city, your guide takes you first to Outa el Hammam Square: the central plaza ringed by indigo buildings, cafés and the Kasbah fortress. This is where the medina's most photographed angles converge, and where most visitors start their walk through the narrow blue alleys.

From there, the guide leads you through the Andalusian quarter and shows you the Grand Mosque, then takes you to Ras el-Maa Waterfall, where mountain water flows through the lower medina and creates a natural gathering spot with views back up into the city. You'll also visit the Spanish Mosque (Bouzafer Mosque) perched on a hill above the medina: the vantage point most travelers use for sunset or sunrise shots of Chefchaouen and the surrounding mountains. The Kasbah Museum, a 15th-century fortress with Andalusian gardens, sits on Outa el Hammam Square if you choose to enter. Your guide can explain what's inside, but the entry fee is separate. You get free time built into the day to wander the alleys, sit in a café or take your own photos.

The vehicle is air-conditioned, and you have WiFi on board and bottled water throughout. Pickup and dropoff happen at your accommodation in Rabat, and the full day (including the drive, stops and free time) takes 11.5 hours. The guide speaks English or French, and children from age 1 are welcome. All areas of the tour are wheelchair accessible, and the vehicle can accommodate wheelchairs and specialized infant seats.
