The experience
The drive from Rabat takes up most of the 12-hour day, so the tour is built around the time spent traveling to and from the town. You travel in an air-conditioned minivan or 4WD vehicle with your private guide, who picks you up from your Rabat hotel and handles the route. Once in Chefchaouen, the medina itself is the main draw: the streets are painted in shades of blue, and the guide will walk you through the alleys and explain the theories behind the color. Some say it keeps mosquitoes away, others that it cools the houses in summer.
Place Outa el Hammam, the main square at the heart of the medina, is surrounded by the Kasbah, shops, restaurants and the Grand Mosque, which you can see from the square but cannot enter since it is still used for worship. The octagonal minaret is visible from the plaza. You'll have time to sit by the tree in the center of the cobbled square and watch the activity around you. A short walk leads to a small waterfall on the outskirts of the medina, set among woodland where locals wash clothes. You can dangle your feet in the water and drink mint tea here. The Spanish Mosque hike is optional depending on your pace and energy. It's a 30-minute climb to an abandoned building with views across the entire town.
The Andalusian Gardens sit in the center of the medina as a quiet green space, and the Kasbah Museum inside holds pottery, musical instruments and other regional artifacts (entry is separate and costs 7 USD per person). WiFi is available on the vehicle during the drive. The guide will tailor the stops and timing to your interests, so you control how long you spend at each place.
