The experience
The trek begins at 9 a.m. at the bivouac, where you meet the guide and help load the camels before the caravan sets off. Each day runs about five hours of walking, roughly 20 kilometers, with a long lunch break to eat and rest. The landscape changes as you move deeper into the desert: sand, rock, open space, and the kind of silence that most travelers describe as the opposite of what they expected to find. Nights are spent at camp, where the guide and cook set up tents, provide mattresses and blankets, and prepare substantial meals. On the evening of day three, you arrive at Chegaga's large dunes and can climb to watch the sunset.
The physical demand is real but manageable if you have moderate fitness and can walk steadily. The bivouac is not a hotel. It is a working camp where the team lives and works, and you are invited into that life rather than served around it. Water, snacks, coffee and tea are provided throughout the day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner happen at camp. All cooking and sleeping gear, dishes and equipment stay with you. You carry only a daypack.
On day four, a 4x4 vehicle picks you up and drives the return route in three hours, retracing the three days of walking in reverse so you see the landscape from a different angle. Back at the bivouac, a hot shower and a final meal mark the end. The guide speaks your language and will adapt the route and timing to your pace and what you want from the days.
