The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the earthy smell—clay dust mixed with a hint of mint from the tea they served as we arrived. The Arterre studio felt cool and calm, even though it was warm outside. Our guide, Youssef, greeted us with a smile and showed us where to hang our bags. He explained that the red clay we’d use comes straight from the hills outside Marrakech. I could feel a bit of nervous excitement as I slipped on my apron and dipped my hands into the soft, damp earth.

We started by kneading the clay, just using our hands at first—though one little boy in our group was brave enough to try kneading with his feet (it’s messier than you think!). Youssef gave us a quick demo on the wheel, then let us try shaping bowls and cups. Mine came out a bit lopsided, but honestly, that made it feel more personal. There were paints and tools everywhere—some folks painted traditional Moroccan patterns, others just went wild with color. The best part? No pressure to be perfect. We laughed a lot, especially when someone’s pot collapsed mid-spin. At the end, we even tried making a zellij tile—those little mosaic pieces you see all over the city. It’s trickier than it looks, but so satisfying when you get it right.
