The experience

The tour starts at Taourirt, the old kasbah in Ouarzazate itself, where you explore the narrow streets and labyrinthine rooms of the palace with a local guide. From there you move to the Atlas Film Studios, a working set complex where you spend about an hour walking through the diverse movie backdrops (including the fortified city wall built for Gladiator), and hearing stories about the films shot there. The studios sit on a ridge with views across Ouarzazate toward the snow-covered Atlas Mountains.

After the studios, the tour heads to Aït Ben Haddou, the fortified clay city about an hour outside Ouarzazate. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is made up of stacked ksars and kasbahs built from earth and stone. A local guide walks you through it for about an hour. The same afternoon you continue to Oasis Fint, where lunch waits at a family home. You choose between couscous, tajine or meat skewers, each available with meat, chicken or vegetarian. After eating, a guide takes you on a walk through the quiet oasis at the river to see the palm groves and learn how the Berber inhabitants live there. The drive back to your hotel or riad in Ouarzazate happens in the late afternoon.
