The experience

The route unfolds across four distinct landscapes. Day one takes you south from Ouarzazate through the Draa Valley's palm groves and past the kasbahs of Nkob in the Anti-Atlas Mountains, ending at the Merzouga Desert Camp where you sleep in a luxury tent under the stars. Day two is built around the desert itself: a 4x4 expedition into Erg Chebbi's dunes, a visit to Khamlia village known for its Gnawa music performances, and a camel ride timed to catch the sunset over the sand. Day three heads north toward the Todra Gorges, stopping first at Erfoud's fossil workshops and the Rissani market (a three-times-weekly souk where locals trade livestock, produce and spices) before the drive into the narrow canyon. Day four carries you out through the Valley of Roses and past Ait Ben Haddu, a UNESCO World Heritage kasbah used as a film set, arriving in Marrakech by evening.

Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian or French and travels with you throughout. The camp in Merzouga is the anchor: you spend two nights there in a furnished tent, with Moroccan dinners served under the open sky and cultural performances around the fire. The camel trek departs in late afternoon so you reach a secluded dune as the light shifts to gold and pink. A 4x4 vehicle handles the desert terrain and the rougher mountain roads. The same driver and guide stay with you for all four days, so there's no handoff or confusion about timing.

Lunch stops are yours to choose along the way: the itinerary names the towns and markets where you'll pass through, but the operator does not arrange or pay for meals. The same applies to drinks and tips. Everything else (the tent, the guide, the vehicle, the camel ride, the entry to sites and the two hotel nights in Dades Valley) is covered in the price.

Operated by Morocco Trips

Is this one for you?Four days is long enough to cross the Sahara and see the gorges without rushing, but short enough to fit into a week-long Morocco trip. If you have only two or three days, a shorter route stays in one region. If you have six, a longer version adds the Atlas Mountains or the coastal south.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, Spanish, French and Italian.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 17 years); Infant (under 6): free.

What is Erg Chebbi and what do you actually do there on day two?

Erg Chebbi is the massive sand dune field that marks the gateway to the Sahara near Merzouga. On day two you explore it by 4x4, discovering hidden oases and the nomadic villages tucked into the landscape, then switch to a camel for a trek into the dunes timed to end at sunset.

Is the Merzouga Desert Camp really luxurious, or is it basic?

The camp offers furnished tents with proper beds and amenities, not bare ground or sleeping bags. Dinners are full Moroccan meals served communally, and there are cultural performances around the campfire in the evening. It's designed for comfort without being a resort.

Do I need any special fitness level or experience to ride a camel?

The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller, and specialized infant seats are available if needed. The camel trek is a leisurely ride, not a strenuous activity.

What happens at Khamlia village and why is it worth visiting?

Khamlia is known for its Gnawa music tradition, and the visit includes performances. Gnawa is a form of Moroccan folk music with deep cultural roots, and the village offers a chance to experience it in an authentic setting rather than a tourist show.

How much time do you spend driving versus exploring on each day?

Day one is mostly driving (Ouarzazate to Merzouga). Day two splits between the 4x4 desert exploration and the camel ride. Day three mixes driving with stops at Erfoud, Rissani market and time walking the Todra Gorges. Day four is a long drive back to Marrakech with stops at the Valley of Roses and Ait Ben Haddu.
