The experience

You meet your guide in the village of Ait Ouglif in the Dades Valley and head straight to the trailhead. The guide gives a short introduction to what you'll see (the geology, the wildlife, the stories of the Berber people who live here) before you start walking. This is not a crowded tour route. Your guide knows which trails most visitors miss.

The hike moves through Monkey Fingers Canyon, where the rock formations rise in narrow, finger-like shapes that give the place its name. You walk through the canyon itself, stop at several viewpoints overlooking the dramatic cliffs and winding valleys of Dades Gorge, and take photos of the landscape. Along the way, your guide explains the geology and shares Berber traditions tied to the land. Partway through, you visit a traditional Berber village, sit down, and drink a glass of Moroccan mint tea while learning about daily life in the valley.

The return walk brings you back to Boumalne Dades and the meeting point. Bottled water is provided throughout, and the whole outing takes about three hours. Children from age five are welcome. Infants sit on an adult's lap during any resting moments.
