The Experience

"If you get lost in the medina, just follow the smell of oranges," Youssef grinned as he handed me a slightly wobbly bike. I didn’t expect to start my day laughing at my own balance, but here we were, weaving through Marrakesh’s old streets with the morning sun already warming up the pink walls. The city felt alive in every direction — men calling out over carts of mint, scooters zipping past, and somewhere a radio playing old love songs in Arabic. Our local guide kept us moving but always slowed down for a story or a quick “watch out!” when a donkey cart appeared out of nowhere.

We stopped at Jemaa el-Fna first — it’s not just a square, it’s like the city’s heartbeat. There were orange juice sellers stacking glasses into little pyramids, and I caught this mix of spices and sweet fruit on the breeze. Youssef pointed to the Koutoubia Mosque’s minaret rising above everything else and told us about its history (he made it sound like an epic). I tried repeating “Koutoubia” properly — didn’t quite nail it, but he just laughed and said I was close enough. It was easy to forget we were on a bike tour; it felt more like tagging along with someone who knew every shortcut.

The Saadian Tombs were quieter than I expected — cool inside, with light sliding across intricate tiles. There was this odd hush there, even though we’d just come from all that noise outside. I remember touching one of the old stone walls (probably not allowed?) and feeling how smooth it was from centuries of hands.
