The experience
The day starts with a drive northeast from Casablanca to Fez, Morocco's cultural capital. Your guide meets you with transport suited to your group size (a car, minivan or coach), and stays with you throughout. The route covers roughly 240 kilometers, so you arrive in the city with the morning still ahead for the medina's narrow pedestrian streets and ornate gates.
Fez El Bali, the fortified medina, is one of the best preserved medieval Muslim quarters on earth, and its layout has barely changed in centuries. You walk past the Royal Palace (viewable from outside only), then through the Fez Mellah, the historic Jewish quarter established in 1438. The Bab Bou Jeloud, the "Blue Door", stops you with its blue and green earthenware tiles covering the walls. It is an entrance to the medina and a visual landmark all at once. Inside, you visit the Medersa Bou Inania, built between 1350 and 1355, the only madrasa in Fez with its own minaret. Dar Seffarine offers a quiet patio with a mosaic fountain where you can pause. The Attarine Madrasa, built in the 1320s next to the perfume and spice souk, shows how the city's institutions and markets grew together. You also see Dar Dbagh, the old royal dyehouse district where craftsmen once dyed fabrics by hand.
The Nejjarin Museum sits in the heart of the medina and traces the region's history and traditional crafts. Entry is included, as is entry to the Kairaouine Mosque, founded in 859 and one of the oldest universities still operating in the world. Your guide speaks English or French, and the car carries bottled water, wet wipes, sweets and candies for the day. The return to Casablanca takes the afternoon and evening, so plan for a full 10 to 11 hours door to door.
