The first thing that hit me as we rolled into Fez was the scent—somewhere between fresh mint and old leather, drifting in from the medina. Our driver had us laughing before we even reached Bab Boujloud, that famous blue gate you see in all the photos. It was still early, so the city felt calm—just a few shopkeepers setting up their stalls and the distant clang of metalworkers starting their day.
Our guide, Youssef, led us straight into the maze of the UNESCO-listed Old Medina. Honestly, I’d have gotten lost in five minutes without him. He pointed out tiny details I’d never have noticed: hand-carved cedar doors, cats napping in sunbeams, and a bakery where locals drop off dough to be baked for lunch. We ducked into Dar Bouanania and Al-Attarine Madrasa—both places are quieter than you’d expect, but every tile tells a story if you look close.
The Kairaouine Mosque is massive—second biggest in Morocco—and though non-Muslims can’t enter, Youssef shared stories about its history and how it’s still an active university. We wandered past spice stalls and copper workshops; I tried to count how many shades of green I saw on the rooftops but gave up after twenty. By midday, sunlight bounced off mosaic fountains and you could hear calls to prayer echoing through narrow alleys.
It usually takes about 3 hours each way by car, depending on traffic and weather conditions.
Yes! The pace is relaxed and there are plenty of stops. The medina has some uneven ground but our guide helps everyone along.
