summary

Chefchaouen’s blue lanes, mountain air and rooftop lunch from Fes

You’ll leave Fes early for Chefchaouen’s winding blue streets, with time to explore its medina at your own pace. Pause at Ras el-Maa waterfall, check out local museums or just people-watch from a rooftop café over lunch (not included). Expect small sensory surprises — colors under your feet, laughter in the alleys — before heading back as dusk settles over the Rif Mountains.

itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Day trip from Fez to Chefchaouen

  • Pick up from hotel in Fez
  • Drive to Chefchaouen in air-conditioned van
  • Explore blue walls and medina streets
  • Visit Kasbah museum and Great mosque
  • See ethnographic museum exhibits
  • Rest by Ras El Ma river
  • Have lunch at square rooftop terrace
  • Return to Fez in the afternoon

The van picked us up just after breakfast in Fes — still a little sleepy, honestly, but our guide was already grinning like he’d had three coffees. The drive out toward Chefchaouen felt longer than I expected (it’s about four hours), but the landscape kept shifting: olive groves, then rocky hills, then suddenly those hazy Rif Mountains. We stopped once for mint tea at a roadside place where the sugar was no joke. I tried to ask for less in French; the old man behind the counter just winked and poured anyway.

Chefchaouen really does hit you with that blue — not just one shade but dozens, even on a cloudy day. Our guide dropped us near the medina gate and let us wander. The alleys twisted everywhere; sometimes you’d turn a corner and find a cat sunning itself or an old woman sweeping blue dust from her doorstep. I got lost almost immediately (no regrets). There was this smell of laundry soap mixed with something floral — maybe jasmine? Hard to tell but it stuck with me. We ducked into the Kasbah museum for a bit; lots of old photos and musical instruments, which made me wish I could play anything besides Spotify.

Lunch was on a terrace overlooking the square — nothing fancy, just grilled chicken and bread, but that view over all those painted rooftops made it taste better somehow. Someone nearby was playing an oud (or pretending to), and you could hear water running down by Ras el-Maa if you listened between bites. We wandered down there after eating; kids were splashing each other at the edge of the river while women washed carpets upstream. Li tried to snap a photo without being too obvious — not sure she pulled it off.

The ride back to Fes felt quieter. Maybe everyone else was tired or just full of blue city daydreams. I still think about that laundry scent and how my shoes picked up some of that powdery color — tiny reminders stuck in the seams.
