The experience
The tour departs Erfoud at 6pm and reaches Merzouga after about an hour by road. From there you mount a camel for a one-hour ride deeper into the desert, arriving at the camp as light begins to fade. The camp sits between the sand dunes of Erg Chebbi itself (not on the edge, but in the middle), and each tent has its own bathroom and shower. Your bags have already been driven there by 4WD, so you arrive with only what you carry.
Once you reach camp, you walk out onto the dunes to sand board before sunset, then return for dinner and live Berber music played by your guide. The next morning you walk back up the dunes to watch sunrise, come down to a Moroccan breakfast, and begin the return journey by camel or 4WD (your choice for the ride back) to Merzouga, where a vehicle takes you the hour back to Erfoud and your hotel. The whole experience runs roughly 18 hours from departure to arrival home.
The guide speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and two other languages, and stays with your group throughout. If your party is larger than four people, the operator books two separate vehicles and tents so nobody is crowded. Bottled water, a turban for sun protection, and electricity to charge phones are all included. Your only real task is to show up at the meeting point ready to ride.
