The Experience

The van picks you up at your hotel in Fez and heads toward the Rif Mountains, where Chefchaouen sits about two hours away. You're traveling in an air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking driver, so the ride itself is comfortable — time to settle in, ask questions, watch the landscape shift from city to hills. When you arrive, the blue walls hit you first. Not a photo filter or a rumor. The entire medina is painted in shades of blue, and it's real enough to touch.

You get roughly four hours to move through the old town at your own pace. Most people start at Place Outa el-Hammam, the main square where the Grand Mosque sits, its minaret visible from almost anywhere in the medina. If you've booked the private tour option, you decide what to see — the Kasbah Museum with its Arab-Andalussian architecture and old prison, the Ethnographic Museum filled with antique weapons and photographs, or just the narrow blue streets and local cafes. Ras el-Maa, a river running through the old city, is there too if you want to walk down to it. Lunch happens on your own — the square has roof terraces with views over the whole town, or you can eat in one of the smaller places tucked into side streets. Nothing is rushed.

In the late afternoon, you head back to Fez. The drive gives you time to sit with what you've seen, and you're dropped at your hotel rather than left at a central point. If you're traveling with young children, infant seats are available. The whole day is designed for people at any fitness level — you're walking through a medina, not hiking, and the pace is yours to set.
